Pray for Order to your day

Ways that God Speaks

Note: This is a new feature on the website. This will be called "Ways that God Speaks". From time to time we will update it with different dreams or events that illustrate different ways that the Lord communicates to us.

On Order

The Lord told me yesterday that I didn’t understand His order yet. I was in the process of explaining to Him about how overwhelmed I felt about all that had to be done, and that I didn’t know what to do about any of it. That’s when He told me that I didn’t understand His order… not yet anyway.

I looked up “order” in the dictionary, and the meaning that seemed most apropos was this one: a condition in which each thing is properly disposed with reference to other things and to its purpose; methodical or harmonious arrangement. (And the dictionary’s example was “You must try to give order to your life.”)

As I read further down in the definitions, I found this one: prevailing course of things, or an established system or regime. And here was the example for that meaning: “The old order is changing.” (Don’t you love it? The very dictionaries will cry out!)

So I really want to understand what He was talking about.

Up until now I have either been a list maker, checking things off as I accomplish them each day, or I have erred on the side of doing nothing…sometimes because I don’t know what to do first, and sometimes just because I don’t want to do anything. Of course the list-making has felt best because it is measurable, and things get done. But I have a list now, and things aren’t getting done. I am just worn out from trying to figure it all out.

And I just seem to have been living under a heavy “oughta” mentality right now. I oughta call that guy about the yard, I oughta call my doctor, I oughta, I oughta, I oughta. It’s exhausting and it becomes hard to sit quietly and rest. And you know, God is a believer in rest.

The Lord knows my to-do list. Yesterday He said, “I am your Bridegroom. I will provide for your needs. You need to relax in Me.”

To which I replied, “ But how do I know what to do and when? “

That’s when He said, “I will tell you. I will order things. You don’t get that yet.”

I have been mulling that over with the Lord since yesterday, and here is what He is saying to me. He has an order. He knows what’s ahead in my day; I don’t. He knows how things interrelate in the spiritual and the natural; I don’t. And He knows what divine appointments He has for me at any given time; I don’t. So it becomes important to know His order for my day. If He wants me at Point A, I don’t want to be at Point B, even if I am working hard on something that I think is for His Kingdom’s sake, you know?

So how does this work? I believe I am being called to an ever increasing level of reliance upon Him. Actually, I believe that we probably all are – not just for the “big things” but for our everyday lives. The times and seasons call for such a reliance on Him that we end one thing and say, “Now what?” Boy, talk about a paradigm shift. At least for me it will be.

But I also believe this: as I rely on Him for His order, as I let Holy Spirit guide me through the hours and minutes of each day, I will begin to experience rest in a greater way, truly letting the burden be on Him to tell me what to do and when – even on the little things (which are sometimes the hardest to hand over). After all, He’s the one who said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” And it is in Him that I live and move and have my being.

I have a sign on my kitchen wall that says, “Keep Life Simple.” Doesn’t that sound great? And really, the Lord’s ways for our lives are simple – much more simple than I think I have let them be. Life is not easy, but the Lord’s yoke is easy and His burden is light in the midst of it, and He has given us His ways to walk out life down here. And that’s what keeps us going.
